Harbor to the Bay: 100% to charity

RIDE DATE:  SEPTEMBER 20, 2008

Harbor to the Bay is a one day bike ride from Boston to Provincetown that improves community awareness and care for people living with HIV and AIDS. Our mission is to give 100% of what we raise to our beneficiaries! No politics, no elaborate production -- just a dedicated group of individuals who want to ride and make a difference in our community. This is a grass roots initiative, and we are solely run by volunteers!

H2B is not a race! We welcome participants of all abilities to join us, whether as a crewmember or a rider. However you contribute, all we ask is that you commit to making a difference.

Harbor to the Bay is an equal opportunity organization. All are welcome to participate without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identification and expression, national origin, citizenship, age, HIV Status, marital or veteran status, disability or any additional characteristics protected by law.

Harbor to the Bay, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization incorporated in the state of Massachusetts.  It's members are local men and women, participants in past AIDS bicycle fundraising events, and friends committed to the delivery of 100% of rider-received pledges to beneficiaries that support HIV and AIDS care throughout Massachusetts.

Launched in 2003, Harbor to the Bay (H2B) has raised nearly $1,000,000 for four local HIV/AIDS organizations; Fenway Community Health Center, AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, Community Research Initiative (CRI), and AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts (AAC).  With 100% of all rider-received pledges going directly to these beneficiaries, H2B's enthusiasm and grass-roots focus has resonated with local supporters and community members.

H2B endeavors to improve community awareness of HIV/AIDS care and services, prevent infection, and engage people impacted by HIV/AIDS. Further, by responsibly and strategically executing the ride, H2B appeals to individuals’ and businesses’ desire to make a difference through donations and social responsibility.

Going forward, H2B would like to expand their fund-raising abilities through increased community participation and partnerships with for-profit businesses. Through their commitment to donate 100% of rider-received pledges, H2B hopes to build the trust of fiscally discerning donors who expect transparency and accountability from the charities they support.

OUR MISSION

  • To increase awareness in our communities to help prevent HIV infection and to care for those already impacted by HIV/AIDS.

  • To donate 100% of rider-received pledges to our beneficiaries.

  • To improve community awareness of HIV/AIDS care and services, and to support those organizations that advance the quality and accessibility of HIV and AIDS care.

  • To organize a grass-roots event, supported by a dedicated group of individuals who want to ride and make a difference in our community.

  • Through our personal actions, to positively impact people living with HIV/AIDS.
OUR MOTIVATIONS

  • Reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS

  • Halting the apathy towards HIV/AIDS.

  • Removing the stigma given to people living with HIV/AIDS, and promoting their personal acceptance in our communities.

  • Drawing attention to the escalating rates of HIV/AIDS infection among heterosexual women and minorities.

  • Encouraging the sharing of candid, constructive feedback and valuable information between communities on how to combat the spread of HIV.

  • Increasing awareness of organizations that offer HIV/AIDS testing and information in our communities.

  • Increasing public recognition and positive associations with local HIV/AIDS programs.

  • Highlighting personal responsibility as a key tool to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

  • Financially supporting local organizations that have lost funding through local and federal government cutbacks.

  • Tightly controlling costs to maximize the amount donated to our beneficiaries.

  • No politics, no elaborate productions.
BUSINESS INTENT

  • Promote the positive reputations of those services that support people living with HIV/AIDS.

  • Execute an engaging, challenging physical event that resonates with riders, crewmembers, volunteers, donors, and sponsors.

  • To structure and manage H2B as a fiscally responsible, trustworthy, and sustainable non-profit.

  • Encourage for-profit business participation and large donor support.

  • Increase community participation and donor identification with the cause.

  • Identify sources of value that H2B can leverage to persuade and reward large donor support.

  • To prudently select beneficiaries with a history of success and an effective business plan for the future.

  • To limit the number of beneficiaries to maximize the impact H2B can have in the community.

  • To select beneficiaries that improve accessibility to HIV/AIDS information and care, including outreach to heterosexual women and minorities.

  • To hold beneficiaries accountable for the responsible use of donations.
TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

H2B believes in transparency and accountability, and wants donors and participants to be confident that they are supporting a fiscally responsible charity. Harbor to the Bay, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, and is run solely through volunteer efforts and has no paid employees.

In 2006, 13% of total revenue covered the costs of H2B. This is far below the 35% recommended by ‘The Standards For Charitable Accountability’ set by the Better Business Bureau. We are proud of our low-cost structure!

H2B has three revenue streams:
  1. Rider-received pledges and fundraising donations

  2. Registration fees

  3. Private corporate donations
Rider-received pledges are collected online or in person. Fundraising donations are collected through events hosted by the sponsors of H2B, and staffed with H2B volunteers. 100% of all rider-received pledges and donations gathered at fundraising events are given to our beneficiaries.

All expenses for the H2B Ride are covered by the registration fees and private corporate donations. Registration fees cover jerseys, safety training, food and route preparation. Private corporate donations are used to cover marketing expenses, merchandise (T-shirts, hats) and participation in the Boston Pride Parade.

Additional expenses include printing and mailing supplies, and postage. A percent of excess revenue from fees and corporate donations is used as seed money for next year’s ride, with any remainder donated to our beneficiaries.

H2B is registered with GuideStar.org, a website dedicated to “producing the largest and most comprehensive publicly available nonprofit information resource.”  H2B's updated information and IRS Forms 990 are available for download.
